Volunteer Opportunities

MOW Drivers

Individuals who are willing to volunteer anywhere from one to five days a week to deliver meals to homebound elderly. Our seniors LOVE their MOW drivers and the drivers and meal recipients usually develop a small friendship. This position requires the person to have a clean driver’s license, be able to walk stairs and be willing to attend annual trainings. Not mandatory, but if possible, this position will also help with packing the coolers which would require an additional hour on the day(s) the person is delivering. Consistency is critical because people will depend on you for their meal.

Time Commitment: One route usually takes between 1 ½ and 2 hours. 

Hours From 9:30 am to noon  on one or more days a week, Monday through Friday

Adult Day Program Volunteers

Individuals who are willing to share a talent or skill with seniors (singing, crafts, scrapbooking, storytelling, story reading, playing cards, etc). This position is ideal for a person who has a lot of patience is kind and flexible. A person who is a good listener and appreciates the stories that older adults like to share would be a great fit. Consistency is critical because the older adults will start looking forward to your visit and will be very disappointed if you do not come.   

Time Commitment: Anywhere from a few hours a day to a few hours once a month.

Hours: At least one hour between 10:30 and 1:30 on one or more days a month, Monday through Friday.

Telephone Reassurance Volunteers

Individuals who are willing to call one or two older adults 3 to 4 times a week (about 15 minutes a day) to see how they are doing and just share a brief conversation. A good listener would do well here. This position does require a small amount of paperwork. A simple report needs to be submitted after each call. Consistency is critical because the older adults will start looking forward to your call and will be very disappointed if you do not call.

Time Commitment: About 1 hour a week per senior.

Hours: There is a great deal of flexibility here; however, once a call time has been established we ask that it is adhered to.

Location: From home.

 

 

Senior Center Volunteer

Individuals who are willing to serve as either a host/hostess or kitchen support staff at one of our senior centers.

Time Commitment:  Between 1 and  1½ hours.

Hours: From 11:30 to 1:00 Monday- Friday
Some sites also serve dinner which would be from 4:30 until 5:30 or 6:00.

Location: Locations across Albany County.

 

 

HIICAP Volunteers

Individuals who are willing to be trained to educate seniors on the various health care products available to them. This position requires some up-front training, a willingness to present to groups of up to about 45 people, to have one-on-one discussions with people about what they need from a healthcare product and help them fill out forms.

Individuals who have healthcare and/ or education background are practically well suited for this role.

Time Commitment: At least 3 hours a week.

Hours: Hours are flexible.

Location: Various locations.

 

 

Administrative Volunteers

Individuals with the desire and willingness to answer phones and provide basic administrative support to the various programs

Time Commitment: Anywhere from 2 to 20 hours.

Hours: Monday through Friday between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.

Location: Various locations.

 

 

Meal Site Volunteers

Individuals who are willing to share a talent or skill with seniors (singing, crafts, music, scrapbooking, storytelling, story reading, playing cards, etc.) at one of our seven congregate dining centers. This position is ideal for a creative, high energy person who can engage people. Consistency is critical because the older adults will start looking forward to your visit and will be very disappointed if you do not come.

Time Commitment: Anywhere from one hour a day  M-F to one hour  once a month

Hours: At least one hour between 10:30 and 11:30 or 12:45 and 1:45 on one or more days a month, Monday through Friday.

Location: Various locations.

 

 

Blog Writers/Facebook Contributors

People willing to research and write educational blogs and mini-articles of interest to seniors. This can be done from a person’s home.

Time Commitment: 1 to 2 hours a week.

Hours: Flexible.

Location: From home.
